Hawaiian Totemic Drum

Hawaiian Totemic Drum

This drum was a commission for a musician who lived in Hawaii for many years. He drove two hundred miles round trip to come and visit, select a drum, and discuss the important elements of his life that he wanted his drum to convey.

A lifelong musician, in his later years he delighted the residents of nursing homes by performing the songs they had listened to in their youth. Although many were afflicted with Alzheimer’s, he said that he could tell they recognized the golden oldies because on hearing them, the light in their eyes would begin to shine. He also spent time drumming with the residents.

After listening to his stories, Jean designed this drum for him. It contains the symbols that are especially meaningful to him, and some of the favorite plants of the four directions. It also includes a bit of the cosmos, with a central sun and cycles of the moon.
